I have decided I don’t want to be like Jesus.
Shocking I know. Especially for a pastor to say that.
Especially when it seems so many people do. Even in church, many people want to be like Jesus. They seem to worship Jesus. If they could be anyone, they would be Jesus.
I understand the allure to want to be like Jesus. I have felt it. To be truthful, there is a part of me that at times wouldn’t mind to be Jesus.
Jesus Luz that is.
Born in Rio de Janeiro on 15 January 1987. Son of a hairdresser and public official in the Rio de Janeiro city government.
His name was given to him by his father who always admired Jesus Christ as the most philosophical mind of all time. His surname Luz means “light” in Portuguese.
He is a DJ. A fashion model. He famously dated Madonna.
He has looks. Money. Fame. Jesus has it all.
Who wouldn’t want to be like Jesus?
Yet he is not who I want to be like.
I want to be like the one who Jesus Luz father admired. The Jesus of the Bible. The Son of God. This is what this Jesus looks like (Philippians 2: 5-8), and I hope to have the courage to like a life like him. How about you?
In your relationships with one another, have the same mindset as Christ Jesus:
Who, being in very nature God,
did not consider equality with God something to be used to his own advantage;
rather, He made Himself nothing
by taking the very nature of a servant,
being made in human likeness.
And being found in appearance as a man,
He humbled Himself
by becoming obedient to death—
even death on a cross!
