Have you ever wondered how do can you hear from God? Perhaps you have said to yourself at some point , “if God spoke to me in some spectacular way then I would believe.” Maybe a visit from an angel, a booming voice from a cloud, a burning bush or some undeniable supernatural encounter with God.
The Bible tells of a man called Elijah who finds himself alone, afraid and a little unsure if God really cares. In a cave at Mt Horeb, after complaining to God that his life has been a failure and that he would rather be dead, he is instructed to stand at the edge of the cave where he will encounter God.
As he stood at the edge of the cave a powerful wind came. A wind so powerful that the ground shook, rocks shattered. This was followed by a terrible earthquake where the mountains were torn apart. Elijah realised that as impressive as these were, God was not in them.
After the earthquake there was a fire, and as impressive as this was Elijah knew that God was not in the fire.
After the fire there was a gentle whisper, not anywhere near as spectacular as the other events that had preceded it, but in the gentle whisper he heard from God. God whispered to him that things weren’t as bad as he had thought, that his enemies would be overcome and his life would have meaning. In fact, he would no longer be alone and other people would support him, and remind him of the presence of God.
Could it be that God whispers to you? Sometimes we waste so much time and energy looking for God in the spectacular, wanting God to dazzle us with some impressive display of His power, when He is gently reminding us that He is here.
Have you ever wondered how you can hear from God? Perhaps it is in the little whispers He is giving you.
