In Matthew 5: 38-42 Jesus invites us to take a surprising posture with our lives. It is to live a life that is not marked by simply accepting injustice or violence done to us or others, nor to replay violence or injustice with more of the same. The life Jesus invites us into is to take a posture with your life which exposes inequity or injustice. Jesus invites us to take a posture with our life that causes those that we encounter to rethink their behaviour.
In Matthew , it is to turn your left cheek to the one slapping you, to offer your coat to the one who is taking everything you have, or carrying the pack of the one who is treating you like a pack horse or mule further than they are comfortable with. In each case, the one who is behaving badly is invited to rethink their behaviour and to make a choice of whether to continue in their behaviour or choose a different way.
When you choose to live this way, one that challenges injustice and inequity, there is no guarantee that you won’t find yourself getting hit on the proverbial cheek, or losing your coat. There is no guarantee that others will choose to do what is right, nor that if there is change that it will be instantaneous. Nevertheless, it is the right way to live. It is the life Jesus invites you into.
Seek His wisdom as you endeavour to live this life. It may involve rethinking some of your purchases where companies pursue unethical practices, it may involve lovingly setting boundaries in some of your relationships, it may involve saying no to some invitations that do not honour God, it may involve being an advocate for those who are hurting. To take the posture with your life that Jesus invites you into may take on many different shapes in different contexts, but listen for His lead, and seek to honour Him.
